01. Watch: Arnold and Ed Corney – Old School Squats

Many of you will be motivated by this riveting clip from the movie Pumping Iron that features a young Arnold Schwarzennegger and his buddy Ed Corney performing an intense set of squats.

I may be dating myself, but this is how we did it in the old days, pure old school style! And you definitely passed out onto the floor after a particularly grueling set. Enjoy!

02. The Benefits of Exercising Before Breakfast

I’ve always found that training first thing in the AM before breakfast was my best time to work out. It’s the only time of the day I have to get a session in, the gym is relatively empty, and the workout wakes me up and energizes me for the day.

Now according to a new study, it can also counteract the effects of a poor holiday diet! “This study for the first time shows that fasted training is more potent than fed training to facilitate adaptations in muscle and to improve whole-body glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity during hyper-caloric fat-rich diet.” In other words, it didn’t matter what the subjects ate, if they trained before breakfast they did not gain weight nor develop insulin resistance, a precursor to diabetes.

Don’t feel bad if you’ve already blown your New Years resolution to lose weight and get in better shape. According to this fine article by Lauran Neergaard, your old bad habits are wired into your brain and you revert back to your old habits primarily when you are under stress or if you follow the same old rituals linked to the habit. No eating in front of the TV ever!
