Head Games and Youth Sports: Have We Gone Too Far?

I’m not a big fan of children playing organized football. I’ve seen the damage wrought by heavy hits to the body and head. Dr. Richard Senelick, a San Diego Neurologist agrees and wrote an excellent article on the issue and some solutions to protect our kids from traumatic brain injury.

The NFL has even posted warnings in all team locker rooms warning of the dangers, let’s warn all our parents too so please forward it to them.

Stretchy Baby Yoga

Did you know my colleague Dr. Christine Hourihan is also a certified yoga instructor who specializes in Mommy and Child Yoga classes?
Dr. Chris is putting together a yoga program in the fall for mothers and their children who are 2 to 5 years old. I’m giving you a heads up to look out for all the details in the next month but we do know that it will be ten weekly sessions held at the Aikido School in Teaneck during the early afternoon. Stay tuned, but in the meantime, enjoy this hilarious short video which says a lot about how natural it is for babies to do yoga.

Could This Be the Key Factor Spiking the Rise In ADHD? An obvious but surprising answer!

It’s so obvious, I think it’s a revelation. A study published by Michigan State economist Todd Elder has found that close to 1 million children in the United States have potentially
been misdiagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
simply because they are the youngest, and therefore the most
immature, in their kindergarten class.
These children are significantly more likely to be prescribed
behavior-modifying drugs such as Ritalin.  Such inappropriate treatment
is particularly troubling because of the unknown impacts of long-term
stimulant use on children’s health.
